3 simple actions to get 4000 hours of viewing on YouTube

Obtaining 4000 watch hours on YouTube is one of the key factors to unlock monetization of your channel . To achieve this, you can get more people to watch your videos or get more views.

It's not always easy to manage to do both at the same time!

In this article, you will learn how to increase your average watch times and then how to increase your views.

Get 4000 watch hours on YouTube: increase your average watch times

To increase your average watch times, you can simply start by creating longer videos.

I used this technique for my interview with Olivier Roland which lasted 55 minutes.

In the capture, we can see that for an average percentage of video watched of 20.4%, the average duration of a view is 11 minutes and 13 seconds. This is much more than the channel average which is between 3 minutes 24 and 4 minutes 38 seconds.

50% average viewing time on a one-minute video, that's 30 seconds. On a 10 minute video, that's 5 minutes. So, the longer your videos are, the quicker you will reach 4000 hours viewed.

However, if your video is long, but everyone leaves after 30 seconds, this won't change your average watch times. You must be able to maintain a good average viewing time on longer formats.

Here are two tips that will allow you to maintain your audience on your videos:

Create quality content

Beyond average viewing times, the quality of your content is the pillar of your success on YouTube. Your content must really be interesting. And creating quality content takes time.

Optimize the structures of your videos so that they are impactful

Your videos should be logical and easy to follow. You need to share value from start to finish. All of this engages your audience throughout your video. They will stay longer. And therefore increase your viewing times. Avoid the beginner's mistake of waiting to share your content.

At Stratégie Vidéo, we use 5 key elements to structure our videos.

  • Hook

The hook is a short promise that sets the tone and why viewers should watch your video.

Try to press on the pain that you will solve. Above all, be clear about the benefits they will gain by applying your advice and why it is important to them.

  • Introduction

The introduction is used to quickly introduce yourself and explain in one sentence what your YouTube channel is about.

  • Content

It’s then time to transmit your content while keeping your initial promises.  Your content must be qualitative. Your audience must be able to achieve the result announced in your hook.

  • Bonuses

Your content solves your viewer's original problem, but you can take it a step further by offering some kind of bonus to help your audience with the next stages of their evolution.

This bonus will have a wow effect and draw attention to problems they will soon face. The bonus is used to give even more. Not just in relation to their original problem, but also in relation to the next steps. This is the best way to make your audience want to come back.

  • Call to action

Now that your viewer has reached the end of your video, give them an action to do. Leave a thumbs up, subscribe, watch another additional video, download a guide, buy one of your products…

Above all, don't ask for too much: focus on the call to action that makes the most sense in relation to your content.

Since TikTok arrived with its short and punchy formats, it's a question of survival to get to the point. Your calls to action and your credits should be short.

This structure is easier to digest for your audience who will really appreciate the quality of your content throughout the video. They know what's going to happen. They know what they'll miss if they leave the video.

There are more chances that people will listen to you and subscribe, like or share. You will also have better results in the eyes of the algorithm which will recommend your videos more.

Now that we have seen how to increase your average viewing times, we will now find out how to increase your views.

Here are the 3 best techniques you can use to get 4000 watch hours on YouTube.

Post regularly to get 4000 watch hours

To have 4000 watch hours, you need to post one or two videos per week for a certain amount of time.

To do this, you must prepare your content well, structure it well, deliver it well, edit it so that it is dynamic and educational. All of this requires 100% commitment.

Use keywords

Nico from Morning Fame carried out a very interesting study on 3000 YouTube channels by comparing traffic sources.

We notice that the type of traffic source for a developing YouTube channel comes almost half from searches made by Internet users on YouTube, what is called “ YouTube Search

Since these channels have few subscribers, it makes sense that video suggestions and homepage traffic do not yet have an influence on the number of views.

Indeed, at the start of your YouTube channel, searches carried out by Internet users are clearly the option that will bring you the most traffic. And for your videos to appear in search results, they must be well referenced, with the right keywords.

On Video Strategy, the keywords allowed us to get more than 5 million views .

The development of a community is the 3rd action to put in place to obtain 4000 hours of viewing on YouTube. Instead of focusing on 4,000 watch hours, instead develop a community of people who appreciate your personality and every video you post.

If we focus on the 4000 hours of viewing, we forget the reason why we created a YouTube channel.

Take a step back and try to answer these 3 questions to fully understand your community:

  1. Who is your channel for?

Many beginners make the mistake of wanting to target everyone with their YouTube channel. Others focus solely on sharing their passions and their daily lives.

Don't make the same mistake.

Rather, your channel must have a precise and well-defined target such as:

  • my channel is for active moms who want to become confident, radiant and elegant through their clothes;
  • my channel is aimed at employees who want to escape the stress generated by their work;
  • my channel is aimed at beginner guitarists who want to learn how to play the classics of French song to set the mood during evenings with friends.
  1. How is your channel different from others?

It’s fundamental to be able to identify why people are watching your channel. Let's take the concrete example of our Video Strategy channel.

If you are here, it's because you want to grow your YouTube channel. But if we go a little further, why do you watch our channel rather than another? I imagine you watch others, but there is often a favorite channel.

You must therefore stand out from your competitors to allow your audience to prefer you.

  1. Why should you subscribe?

If you post videos like “how to change a light bulb,” people are unlikely to subscribe. Once their bulb is changed, they will never return to your channel.

Your content must therefore encourage your viewers to subscribe to your channel to see your content.
